I am, therefore I must think...

The purpose of this blog is similar to many blogs out there: to spread ideas. Particularly my ideas. I consider myself a rational, active minded person. I love the discussion of ideas but if you use any logical fallacies, prepare to be called out on them. I am interested in individual liberty and the philosophies involved with liberty. I refuse to label myself as this type of philosopher or that, because I think broad labels lead to dogmatism and regression of ideas. Respect begets respect, so keep that in mind when commenting.

Please feel free to browse through my public posts to get a feel for who I am and what I think. If you are not a member, I have just recently made it so you can comment on my public posts, however the comment will first need to be approved by me, so please be patient. If you wish to view the rest of my writings (70% of this blog is only viewable to members) please register or login. If you like what I have to say, be sure to subscribe to my RSS feed as well:

I generally loathe social networking sites, but I make an exception for Facebook. The reason I like Facebook is a) nice clean layout without music or other crap b) you have to be over 18 to join. They started it by restricting it to college students but have now opened it up to all sorts of riff-raff. If you are over 18, I suggest you get an account.

…and when you are done getting an account, add me as your friend.

Stem Cell research is great.  However, using the government to force (at the point of a gun, mind you) its citizens to fund that research is WRONG.  Especially since some of those individuals do not agree with you.  No matter what their reasons, it is still their right to disagree.  You are taking away that right.  I am sorry about your ailment, but resorting to force on others to save yourself is wrong.

Objectivist-Libertarian

October 25th, 2006, 1:00 am

True Objectivists reject the Libertarian political party, and for some fairly good reasons. Mainly the reason that Libertarianism is a stripped down version of Objectivism. It is basically all of the political ideology of Objectivism (capitalism, limited government, individual rights) minus the ethics (rational self-interest), metaphysics and epistemology.

I am an Objectivist who supports many Libertarian candidates, because they are basically Objectivists flying the Libertarian flag to gain support for their campaign. I am weary of calling myself a Libertarian, because I am really an Objectivist when it comes down to every aspect of my life.

Libertarianism has ALMOST become synonymous with Objectivism, due to the large number Objectivists in this country who support Libertarian candidates, but is not fully compatible due to many members of the party being socialist-libertarians, anarchists (anarcho-whatevers) and other factions that have their own set of ethics attached.

I think the Libertarian party is wrong to leave the back door open. I think ethics, metaphysics and epistemology are essential for this third party to work. I think that a stripped down political philosophy is no better than religion.  It leaves definitions subjective and malleable, which is the back door that the power hungry wait for to take control of any political movement.

INDIVIDUALISMMMMMMMMMM!

If you haven’t heard the newest bizare twist on Atlas Shrugged the movie, you’ll love this one.  Randall Wallace (writer of Braveheart) is set to be the writer for Atlas Shrugged.  Not only that, but the Baldwins are thinking about trimming the movie down into one movie instead of a trilogy.  I can’t wait to see what John Galt’s speech comes out looking like in script format.

Nuclear Power NOW

October 16th, 2006, 5:24 pm

I do not understand why leftists are so eager to have their cake and eat it too.

A report has come out that there is direct evidence that greenhouse warming has caused the collapse of an ice shelf in Antarctica.  Let us assume for a second that this evidence is flawless and that the greenhouse effect, which is presumably caused by humans, is actually causing the polar ice caps to melt.  Now let’s try to come up with a solution to this problem, such as reducing green house gasses.  Greenhouse gas is primarily caused by two things:  water vapor and burning fossil fuels.  Humans are only capable of producing fossil fuel emissions enough to presumably cause a global warming problem, so the water vapor issue is basically out of the question.  Now what causes the most fossil fuel emissions?  Power plants (both industrial and public).  What technology do we have that could counter this?  Nuclear.  Why can’t we have it?  Because the leftists have legislatively blocked nuclear power for decades.

Eat your cake leftist idiots.  No, you can’t have it too.  And don’t even try the electric car argument.  You killed that dream too when you killed nuclear power.  You can’t create something from nothing.

Communism Works

…at stifling technology. This is a map of North and South Korea. The bright areas indicate city lights. Communism is SO cool, it completely destroys evil technology, like lights, yet can still protect its people with good technology like atom bombs.

My Favorite Campaign Ad

I hate campaign ads, except for this one!  I just found this on the Drudge Report:

Avatars

October 10th, 2006, 7:46 pm

Since Gravatar suddenly died, I installed a new plugin that allows you to upload an avatar. You must be a member to use avatars. If I configure the script correctly, you will not have to login to display your avatar. As long as you use the same name as your membership account when commenting, your avatar should display.

So, how do you upload an avatar? Simple.

CLICK >>> Upload avatar.

Protest?

October 9th, 2006, 11:07 pm

I don’t care what the man on stage is arguing for or against, this mob shows exactly what leftist mentality breeds. Read the comments on this video (click the video twice) if you wish to see how many idiots think that force is an acceptable way to argue. Scary.

Do these people think that they won by trashing the stage? Are they really proud of squelching another’s right to free speech?

At least the guy at the end has some sense.

Determinist Faith

October 8th, 2006, 2:21 am

I am, therefore I must think. That quote has never meant as much to me as it does this very moment.

I believe you can accept determinism as a philosophy, but I think that if you are wrong about your philosophy, then you are setting yourself up to destroy your mind. Objectivists believe that volition is the focus of the mind on subjects to form concepts. It has been explained to me that everything in reality has identity. A=A, mind=mind. Without identity, reality has no logical merit, no Objective reality beyond our own minds. Without the axiom of identity, our discussions are pointless.

Scientists make the mistake of believing that the cause and effect relationship that exists in macroscopic science can be applied down to the quantum level. They assume that A=A, therefore a=A. Not enough is known about the quantum level to make such a bold statement as determinism does. It would take a lot of faith to be a determinist. To claim that everything in our universe is abides by mechanical causality is making a huge assumption on how our universe works on the macro and quantum levels. (I don’t know enough about science to make this statement either, so cross that.)

My big problem with determinism lies in the individuals who claim it as their philosophy. It they truly believe that our minds are determined then why actively use your mind at all? Why not just go with the ebb and flow of the fate that the causes have dealt you? Why make value and moral judgements? With this knowledge, why question anything?

I am, therefore I must think. I think that I can not think without volition. If you wish to continue to question volition, do so on the other post. This post is my turn to ask the questions. Here they are again, if you have the will to answer them:

  1. Why actively use your mind at all?
  2. Why not just go with the ebb and flow of the fate that the causes have dealt you?
  3. Why make value and moral judgements?
  4. With this knowledge, why question anything?
